History of The Transport Company Limited (Bor Kor Sor)

The Transport Co., Ltd. (TCL) is a state enterprise under the Ministry of Transport that provides intercity passenger bus services and various logistics services throughout Thailand. The Transport Co., Ltd. was established on July 13, 1930, under the name Thai Aerial Transport Co., Ltd., as the first company to pioneer commercial aviation in the country and to operate passenger bus routes between Bangkok–Lopburi and Bangkok–Prachinburi. Later, during World War II, it became a state enterprise and was renamed “The Transport Co., Ltd. (TCL)” in 1938.

History

Year Event
1947 The government separated domestic aviation operations from the company. In 1948, the company began maritime operations with a fleet of 48 vessels until 1957.
1959 The government granted the company exclusive concessions for Category 2 bus routes in 25 provinces and assigned it as the central authority for integrating private bus operators into its system.
1959–1976 The company integrated major private bus operators into its system, ensuring they followed regulations. Despite initial financial losses, the company improved its operations and achieved profitability by 1965, even distributing bonuses for the first time in 1976.
1979–1988 The company restructured its operations and encouraged private bus owners to form cooperatives or associations. This led to the establishment of the Association of Passenger Bus Operators in 1983, marking significant progress in collaboration.
1967 The foundation stone was laid for the Northern and Northeastern Bus Terminal at Mo Chit, which became a well-known landmark.
1997 The new Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), commonly known as Mo Chit 2, was officially opened. This 4-story facility was designed with modern safety and convenience in mind, offering a full range of amenities for passengers.
1999–Present The company launched international bus routes to neighboring countries, starting with services between Thailand and Laos. Over the years, routes expanded to Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, supporting the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Notable routes include Bangkok–Phnom Penh, Chiang Mai–Luang Prabang, and Chiang Rai–Bo Keo.
2016 The company launched 2,000 vans to provide transport service in five routes to compete with private vans which operate on the routes without authorization.
2025 The Ministry of Transport is considering moving all three main long-distance bus terminals to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.
From past to present, the Company has been able to operate in accordance with the policies assigned by the government and the directives of the Company’s Board of Directors in providing services to the public. Since the fiscal year 1984, the Company has consistently operated at a profit. With continuous efforts in management improvement and service development, the Company is well-prepared to adapt to future changes. Currently, The Transport Co., Ltd.
